The Cathedral of the Resurrection in St PetersburgThe Red Square : the Cathedral of St Basil the Blessed (left) - the Spasskaya Tower (part of the Kremlin) (right)The Kazan Cathedral - St PetersburgSt Petersburg viewRussia is the country of vast landscapes, vibrant life, beautiful contrasts, and interesting people. Taking an immense space of 9000 kilometers from west to east and 5000 from north to south, being home to people of so many different nationalities and customs, Russia is often called a "bridge" between Europe and Asia, both geographically and sociologically. From the ancient times up to now, Russia has been changing and re-shaping itself, its boundaries, its culture. In the ancient times, the Slavs, Finn tribes, Tatars, had made their way through Russia, and this mix of many different nations and their traditions has defined the unique Russian character and culture.

MOSCOW is the barometer and nucleus of the changes sweeping through Russia. Nowhere are Russia's contrasts more apparent than here - ancient monasteries and ultra-modern monoliths stand side by side, and New Russian millionaires and poverty-stricken pensioners walk the same streets. ST PETERSBURG - known to the world as the "Northern Capital of Russia" and the "the Venice of the North", it is virtually unharmed by the 1930-50s Stalinist reconstruction. Downtown St. Petersburg dazzles the eye of a visitor with splendid palaces, stylish monuments, straight avenues, beautiful bridges and other attractions. St. Petersburg is filled with history and mystery. Where else would you find a city which is not even 300 years old, but is already full of myths and legends?

Scandanavia awakens to spring with budding flowers, gloriously long days and many festivities and events to mark the change. Among the season's noteworthy highlights: Denmark celebrates a fairytale anniversary. Finland's King's Road offers cycling, fine cuisine, great design and historic attractions a plenty. Iceland's "Got Art" in a big way. Norway has news for those keen on wild salmon. And kid-friendly Sweden offers up a host of family attractions. New air service, exciting marathons and a genuine celebration of Mother Nature make it great fun to visit Scandinavia now.

DENMARK - A one thousand-year history written by ambitious kings, inspiring artists and celebrated designers awaits you in the medieval streets, 17th-century canals and modernist architecture of Copenhagen.
From its origin as a humble fishing village to its heyday as the glittering capital of the Danish empire, to its current position as one of the world's premier design capitals and Scandinavia's pre-eminent city, the stories and characters of Copenhagen's history are there to be discovered in its sumptuous palaces, copper-roofed town houses and atmospheric cobbled squares.

Finland - winterFINLAND - The first crusade to Finland was led by the King of Sweden in 1155, starting a union with Sweden that was to last for 600 years. In 1809 Finland was incorporated into the Russian Empire as a Grand Duchy. Swedish laws were retained and the country was allowed to keep its own currency, mail and railway systems. Helsinki became the capital in 1812 (replacing Turku in the south-west). The official national languages were – and still are - Finnish and Swedish. Amid the turmoil of the Russian Revolution, Finland declared its independence in 1917, establishing its present constitution and status as a republic in 1919.

NORWAY - From 800-1050 AD, the Norsemen entered the European arena in a serious way. The Vikings came suddenly and intensely and frightened the daylights out of established society, which certainly was used to war, but not to the surprise tactics employed by the Vikings. The Vikings were not just warriors and seafarers but were also peaceful farmers and merchants. They came from what today are Denmark, Sweden and Norway. In Oslo, there are wonderful opportunities to become familiar with the Vikings and their age, especially their sea-worthy sailing vessels. Several of these beautiful long ships can be seen at the Viking ship museum and in the theme park Vikinglandet it is possible to get a good impression of how life may have been in a Viking village of that time.

SWEDEN - Sweden is the biggest sausage in the Scandinavian sizzle, covering an area of 450,000 sq km. The dominant characteristics of the landscape can be attributed to glacial activity. The 7000km-long coastline, particularly in the west and near Stockholm, is constantly cut by fjords. Lubbers rue that it doesn't get much drier inland, with about 100,000 lakes plugged into Sweden. The islands of Öland and Gotland, south of Stockholm, consist of flat limestone, but they're sand-fringed and have been turned into beachy retreats for urban escapees. Norrland (a practical term for the northern 60% of the country) is sparsely populated, comprising a near-uniform expanse of forest, river and rapid. Sweden's highest peak is the glacier-capped northern peak of Mt Kebnekaise at 2111m
